Abandonment at Sea: When a Crew Is Left Without Support

#For seafarers#USTU#Ukraine

What happened

According to the ILO, Greece has recorded another abandonment case: 26 seafarers of different nationalities, including Ukrainians, were left without proper support and care. The case materials also note wages unpaid for more than a month and the need for repatriation.

Why it matters

Abandonment is not just a “voyage issue” or a “commercial difficulty.” When a crew is left without proper supplies, medical care, wages, and a clear response from the responsible parties, it becomes a matter of safety, health, and basic human dignity.

Standards under MLC 2006 set the baseline clearly: seafarers must not be left alone in a crisis, and the flag state, port authorities, financial security mechanism, and shipowner must act quickly and in sync. Delays are dangerous not only for the people on board, but for the entire maritime transport system.

What should happen next

These cases should end not with statements, but with concrete action: stable support for the crew, repatriation of the seafarers, payment of what is owed, and a transparent review of how the vessel reached this point.

For seafarers, this is another reminder: if normal contact with shore disappears, wages are delayed, or conditions on board deteriorate quickly, the issue must be raised immediately. At sea, silence is often too expensive.
