A Seafarer’s Rights When Pay Is Delayed: First Steps

A seafarer's rights when wages are delayed are the right to be paid on time, to see a clear wage statement, to file a complaint without pressure, and to use shipboard or external channels to fix the breach.

What should you do first?

Start by fixing the amount, the date, and the channel through which the payment was supposed to arrive.

  • Keep the contract, payment messages, chat logs, bank records, and any promise about the transfer date.
  • Ask for a written explanation: how much is delayed, for which period, and when the money will be paid.
  • If the ship has a complaint procedure, use it immediately. Under MLC 2006 standards, that is a normal protective step, not a “fight”.
  • If you need a confidential route, use /en/report or reach out through /en/contacts.

What rights already apply?

MLC 2006 standards require regular and full payment, plus a clear monthly wage account.

According to the official ILO text:

  • wages must be paid regularly and in full under the employment agreement;
  • payments should not be delayed beyond monthly intervals for ships flying the flag of a ratifying State;
  • seafarers must receive a monthly account showing amounts due and amounts paid.

When should you escalate?

You should escalate as soon as the internal route stops producing results.

Situation Action
Delay is only a few days Written request and evidence collection
No reply Master, onboard complaint procedure, union support
Delay keeps going /en/report and /en/contacts
Wages remain unpaid for a long time Check abandonment and financial security under MLC 2006 standards

If unpaid contractual wages reach two months or more, this is no longer a small glitch. It is time to check the abandonment mechanism. IMO/ILO guidance on seafarer abandonment links such cases to unpaid wages, repatriation, and basic support.

What should you avoid?

Do not stay silent, do not hand over original documents unless needed, and do not wait until the end of the contract if the money simply does not come.

  • Keep a timeline: date, amount, who replied, and what was promised.
  • Do not accept vague “we will settle it later” answers.
  • If pressure grows, move to the official channel and save copies of every message.

If you want us to review the contract or suggest the fastest route, start with /en/seafarers or /en/join.
