Ukraine’s Defense Forces sank Russian container ship Yanina

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on August 1 that Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck targets in the Black Sea and Azov Sea areas, including the sanctioned Russian container ship Yanina.

Strike on Yanina

According to Zelensky, Yanina was sailing under the Russian flag and had a capacity of more than 100,000 tonnes. He said the vessel sank after being hit by Ukraine’s Defense Forces, Suspilne reported.

Refinery strikes

Zelensky also said that the same night, Security Service of Ukraine units hit infrastructure at three Russian oil refineries in Bashkortostan.

According to him, the targets were almost 1,600 kilometres away, and the plants process millions of tonnes of oil per year. The president described the strikes as part of Ukraine’s “long-range sanctions” plan.

Earlier, Zelensky had reported other long-range strikes on Russian logistics sites, fuel infrastructure and vessels. On July 22, he referred to targets in Russia’s Krasnodar and Stavropol regions, as well as a tanker and four dry cargo vessels of Russia’s “shadow fleet” in the Black Sea and Azov Sea areas, according to 24 Kanal. On July 25, Zelensky reported strikes on sites in Kirov, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg and Rostov-on-Don, as well as vessels in the Caspian Sea, BlackSeaNews reported.
