More Than 570 Ships Attacked in the Black Sea Since the Start of 2026

Since the start of 2026, more than 570 ships have been attacked in the Black Sea and at least 40 seafarers have been killed. The Black Sea has become the world’s most dangerous region for merchant shipping.

Scale of the Attacks

The highest number of attacks was recorded in the third quarter of 2026. Around 387 ships were hit between July and September—more than five times the figure recorded in the previous quarter.

Suspilne reported the figures, citing the Financial Times, maritime security company Ambrey and the International Maritime Organization.

Impact on Ports and Exports

Russian strikes are prompting shipowners to reduce voyages, while the number of port calls to Greater Odesa has fallen sharply. Vessel insurance costs have increased ten- to twelvefold, raising the cost of maritime transport.

Rising insurance costs and fewer voyages are placing exporters under dual pressure: fewer vessels are available, while transporting each shipment is becoming more expensive. This reduces the capacity of the maritime route and forces market participants to account for greater risks when planning deliveries.

The reduction in voyages is limiting Ukrainian agricultural producers’ ability to export harvests through seaports. The stability of maritime traffic affects not only shipment speed but also the overall competitiveness of Ukrainian agricultural exports in foreign markets.
