Ten Deaths Confirmed After Russian Attack on Civilian Vessel Near Odesa

Ukrainian officials reported the consequences of a Russian attack on a civilian merchant vessel near Odesa. According to information published on July 19-20, the Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel was leaving a Ukrainian port after being loaded with corn when it was hit by a missile strike.

Ukrainian media, citing Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Kuleba and other officials, initially reported six dead seafarers and four people missing. Eight crew members were evacuated, two of them injured.

On July 20, Odesa regional governor Oleh Kiper said that the bodies of all 10 victims had been recovered during the search-and-rescue operation. They included the pilot and members of the crew. The bodies were taken to the forensic medical bureau. Earlier reports said there were 17 Syrian and Indian nationals on board, as well as a Ukrainian pilot from the Delta Pilot branch of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority.

NV, citing the Ukrainian Navy, reported that the vessel was GOLDEN LEO (IMO 9181833) under the flag of Guinea-Bissau. According to that account, Russian forces fired three Kh-59/Kh-69 cruise missiles at the vessel, and a fire broke out after the strike hit the starboard side of the superstructure.
